During these two years I lived in different households of people. It was three to be exact. The people were all very nice, but one thing that was lacking was a good food trip. I still ate regular American food. Hamburgers, pizza, milkshakes, whatever.
The first household I lived in we each pitched in 35 dollars a month for food. Nobody really had any money. This was fine, except we never had much food. I remember eating air sandwiches. They are two piece of bread with air between. My roommate who was the single mom, would cook a nice chicken dinner once a week, and we would all sit down and eat together. This was nice. But basically, we didn't have much food, we didn't eat together and really I didn't know much about cooking myself. The two years in college, I ate in the school cafeteria. The food was awful, but that is what I had.
The next place I lived I just had one roommate, then she moved out, and a nice couple moved in. They pretty much did their own thing, and I did mine. By this time I had a boyfriend, who lived near by. I would go to his house and we basically lived on chopped meat and onions, eggs and onions, and Mrs. Pauls Fish Sticks. This second place was fairly expensive for what it was, and I found a third place that was much cheaper, with more people and moved in.
Everyone was really nice. Food wise we had a jar of mustard in the fridge. I don't even know what I ate. I still had the boyfriend, so maybe it was at his house, eating the usual fare. Anyway, one day I went to visit some friends, I had never visited before. They asked me to dinner. They were vegetarians. They ate eggs and dairy, but no meat of anykind. They made a really nice meal from things I never heard of before. They had brown rice, and sauteed zucchini with wheat germ on top. I don't know if there was anything else. This doesn't sound like much but somehow I was very impressed. There refrigerator was stuffed with good food, and the four of us sat down and ate an actual meal together. I told them how nice this all was, and to my surprise they asked me to move in with them. They didn't have anymore bedrooms, but they had a dining room that we blocked off with a tapestry. Now I was living in a vegetarian household.
I didn't really know anything about being a vegetarian. I just copied whatever they did. I ate a ton of brown rice, and found out about a tiny little coop type place that had grains in bulk. I remember going there and buying my brown rice and being amazed. (I think I am easy to amaze).
The most ironic part of this whole story is that they all moved out on me in about 3 weeks, from me moving in. The couple decided they wanted to live in another household. They thought the other girl and I would just live there, I could take a room, and we could find another roommate. Well the other girl felt betrayed that they left her, and she freaked out and left town. I went from living in the dining room, to having a nice 3 bedroom apartment to myself. It was much nicer than the place I had moved out of. I advertised and found other roommates, and it was all good.
I remained a vegetarian, meaning eggs and dairy. No meat of any kind.
