I Work at Summer Camp: I First Discover the Woods

The summer after my jr year in high school I worked at a Jewish Charity Summer Camp in the Catskill Mountains. I went there because a friend of mine had gone to one the year before. She said it was all New York City kids, and they were way more friendly then Long Island kids. She was right.

Anyway, I went, and all the counselors were my age 16. All the workers were 16. I was a waitress. The senior counselors were in college. It was what you call a very young crowd, and lots of fun!

Two things made this a special, new experience for me. One was that I had never really been in the woods before I went there. Two, tons of boys liked me, they ALL liked me!

The camp was very rustic, and set totally in the woods. The cabins just had screens, and their were outhouses. There really wasn't much electricity either. There was a big lake. I absolutely loved it all. A part of me I never knew, just came alive there, in the primitive woodsy setting. Little did I know then, but this was to become a predominate theme of my adult life.

The other part, the boys. In my home town I had lots of nice girl friends, and I was quite content. But I had never really been very popular with the boys. No one really payed attention to me. I arrived at this camp, and for some reason, I don't know why, ALL the boys liked me, and wanted to be my boyfriend. Like right away. I don't know why. It was confusing, I didn't really know what to do. so, I just decided to pick one, and he became my boyfriend for the summer. It worked out just fine.

The other great thing about being at this camp, is that we just all had so much togetherness there. Everyone just hung out together all the time. We were so close. One kid knew folk dancing really good, and we would all folk dance together everyday, just for fun. He also knew about the show Hair, and we would practice scenes from it.

This was truly one of those great experiences of your life. I just loved it there.

Sadly the summer ended, and we had to all say goodbye. We couldn't bear being apart, and we actually had a reunion the next weekend at Coney Island. I broke up with my boyfriend there. Little did I know that one of the senior counselors had liked me all summer. I never even talked to him, because to me, he was old. He was in college. I ended up hanging out with him that day, and he became my new boyfriend. So for senior year in high school, I had a boyfriend who was a sophomore in college. His school was an hour from my house. My parents actually let me go spend weekends there with him, and he would come stay at my house too. We were together for a year, and basically it ended because I went away to college, 500 miles away, and the distance just made the thing fizzle out. He was a nice guy and a nice boyfriend.

As far as the rest of the people at the camp. We really did love each other, and once a month we would have reunions in New York City. We would meet in Central Park and go to Art Museums and Horn and Hardart Automat. The automat was this space age like place to eat. It was space age like to me, because they had all the food in revolving cases. You could put your money in and out came the food. No people. All mechanized. Truly awesome and unbelievable!
